After discharge (first one month)
- No lifting items over 10 kg for six weeks
- No Driving for four weeks
- You may: Walk and use a stationary bicycle, perform light housework, if you feel strong enough, you can use stairs.
- You may not be left unattended or alone for one month after transplant.
- Avoid contact sports like football, cricket, hockey etc. which can directly hit to transplanted kidney, you can play badminton.
After two months, you may
- Swim in clean pools (Do not swim until your incision is completely healed , Never swim in fresh water lakes or rivers due to increased risk of infection)
- Bike ride, jog and participate in sports that require bending / lifting.
- Increase the amount and distance you walk gradually.
- Mow your lawn and perform other yard work.
- You should be able to return to job work within 2- 4 months, depending upon the nature of your job.
Sexual activity after renal transplant
- You can resume the sexual intercourse 6 to 8 weeks after transplant surgery.
- Condoms are acceptable birth control methods (IUD is not recommended).
Travel
- Certain destinations require vaccinations. Check with your transplant team prior to travel as you cannot take live vaccines under immunosuppressants.
- Locate the nearest transplant center at your location beforehand.
- Take medications for your entire duration of trips (+15 days) and keep them with you all the time.
- Avoid going to crowded places.
Daily routine
- Check weight in the morning.
- Take temperature.
- Check blood pressure.
- Check fasting blood sugar (At least for 3 months or regularly as advised in diabetes patients and then as advised).
- Check urine output at least once in a month after 3 months post- transplant. Report if any significant decrease in urine output or frothiness in urine.
