What happens to sexual function after kidney transplant?

Most of the sexual functions return to normal after a successful kidney transplant if the sexual problem was due to kidney disease or being on dialysis. You and your partner should talk to your treating transplant team about any problems related to sexual function, or if you have questions about safe sex, contraception or pregnancy.

In case of male transplant Recipient when can you resume sexual activity?
  • You can resume sexual intercourse 8 to 12 weeks after kidney transplant.
  • Condoms are acceptable birth control methods (IUD is not recommended).
In case of woman of child bearing age, when can she become pregnant after kidney transplant?

Women of child bearing age should consult with their transplant physician and an obstetrician regarding pregnancy and/or contraception. Before becoming pregnant you should:

  • You should be mentally and physically strong enough to cope the stress of pregnancy.
  • Should wait at least one year after transplant.
  • Should wait until kidney function is stabilised.
  • Talk to your doctor about changing some of your medications that can harm the baby.
  • Visit an obstetrician who specializes in high-risk pregnancies.
  • Be aware about the risks and benefits of breastfeeding and the medications which can be passed on through your breast milk and can be harmful to your baby. If you are interested in breastfeeding, it is very important to discuss the medications you are taking with your obstetrician.
